Binary
explosives are a safe, effective, and economical alternative to neutralize
landmines and UXOs. They can be used as a bulk explosive for high order
destruction of different types of mines and munitions, and extensive field
use and testing demonstrate the effectiveness of this kind of unconventional
explosive. The binary system uses two chemical components, a solid and
liquid that are mixed prior to use. Before mixing, the components are
non-explosive. Once mixed, they become a 1.1.D* explosive with high shock
energy. Detonation velocities vary between 4297.6 m/s (14,100 fps) and
6553.2 m/s (21,500 fps) depending upon product configuration. The binary
explosive is packaged in three different configurations to provide optimum
flexibility for field use. These products are classified as a Class 3
flammable liquid when transported.
*Reference to the various types of classifications
of explosives, such as 1.4S, 1.4B and 1.1D, signifies the transportability
of these product items by commercial aircraft or other modes of commercial
transportation.
